Just Released On The Bombora Label RECKLESS LOVE: The Tim Gaze Anthology
At the age of 11, Tim Gaze was “borrowing” his older brother’s guitar from its hiding place in the wardrobe and learning to play a few chords.
Shortly after his 16th birthday, Tim became lead guitarist for a bluesy innovative band from Newcastle called Tamam Shud.
An amazing start to an amazing career.
The music journalists of the time made much of the potential and obvious talent of this young guitar wizard. They were right and, almost four decades on, Tim’s latest CD is the proof.
Jimmy Barnes comments on his mate, Tim Gaze
"Tim Gaze is and always has been one of the best guitarists that Australia has ever produced. I remember seeing him in the early days with the boys from Cold Chisel and we were all blown away with his taste and feel. Years later I was lucky enough to get to play with him in John Lord's band. We became friends again and I immediately asked him to join my band. We have worked together on and off ever since.
He is a great player and a great friend of mine. I cannot speak highly enough of him, he is one of nature's true gentlemen. But not only that he can make his guitar sing like an angel and scream like the devil. He is truly gifted."
Jimmy Barnes
On the Bombora label, Tim Gaze has just released “Reckless Love: The Tim Gaze Anthology” - thirty one original recordings on two CDs that trace the six-string journey of one of Australia’s greatest ever guitarists.
Through the years Tim has been an influential member of several highly regarded Australian bands – Tamam Shud, Kahvas Jute, Ariel, Rose Tattoo, The Aussie Rebles and The Hoochie Koochie Men – as well as several bands featuring his own name. And then some.
“Reckless Love” features landmark tracks from all these groups including the 1973 Australian Single Of The Year – Jamaican Farewell by Ariel – and Suddenly by Rose Tattoo’s Angry Anderson, the song that featured behind Scott and Charlene’s wedding on Neighbours and was aired around the world.
From the very beginning, Tim has had a strong association with surf music and the surf community. It began with Tamam Shud. The band was a significant contributor to the soundtrack of the early 70s Australian surf film Morning Of The Earth.
This lead to a number of other soundtracks including Band On The Run and the Hot Buttered Soul series. Tim and the Shud also performed on the acclaimed “Delightful Rain: a celebration of Australian surf music” in 2006.
A mixture of surf, blues and rock, “Reckless Love: The Tim Gaze Antholgy”is an enjoyable track by track journey of one man’s contribution to Australian music history. Throughout, Tim’s electrifying guitar work shines through.
Today Tim is 54, a quiet, unassuming man who down plays his talent but is also quick to point out that his career is “still a work in progress”.
Dan Rumour
and the Drift The songwriter behind the Cruel Sea indulges his instrumental cravings
TEX PERKINS ONCE CLAIMED that most of the material contained on the Cruel Sea's first three albums was lifted from one four-track tape that Dan Rumour had recorded. Listening to the shimmering, old-world instrumentals that the guitarist leads here, it's easy to understand how an hour of music could yield so much - Rumour delivers more inspired imagination in three bars than most people manage in three songs.
While instrumentals were always a key part of the Cruel Sea's set (that was, after all, how they started), Rumour is obviously delighted about this opportunity to wallow in wordless wonder for an entire album, rolling surf, reggae, soul and rock & roll into a collection of tunes that glide effortlessly from groove to gorgeously relaxed groove, and never once make you wish Tex had dropped in for a lazy afternoon session.

NEW DAN RUMOUR CD
From the founder of The Cruel Sea … DAN RUMOUR AND THE DRIFT
Released on the Bombora label and available right here in our Bombora Shop
Here’s what the current edition of Pacific Long Boarder magazine had to say about this release:
Must have drifted off in the sun ... but suddenly you’re awake and it’s so hot on the bare sand and so bright you have to squint to try to make anything out. The sea is shimmering in the glare, white-hot sequins pulsing with a lazy swell, the occasional silhouette of a boardrider arcing across the electric face of a wave . . . but its so hot and so bright, its hard to be sure of anything but the sound of the surf and . . . this music, dancing in the heat.
Dan Rumour knows how to turn the Australian summer into a tune. His sun-baked, salt-encrusted sound was the magic behind The Cruel Sea, a band that caught the ear of the surf scene well before Tex Perkins climbed on board and took them uptown with his swaggering menace.
Now Rumour is back, with The Drift, and we have a new soundtrack ready for summer. And it’s a mighty sound.
He takes the surf guitar template (clean Fender, whammy bar and reverb) and spices it up with all the elements that made those Cruel Sea tunes snap and fizz in the first place. Funky organ fills, cool slidework and tasty beats, rounded out with Rumours rhythm guitar trademark a chopped-up bounce that suggests a right wrist swung on ball-bearings.
Disc opener Sundowner is an elegantly structured statement of intent, a reminder that the surf instrumental can be stately, smart and sinewy in equal measure. Get Up, Sugar and The 13th Hat offer the Drifts bent take on playful dub no surprise, really, considering the sleeve notes include reggae stars like The Upsetters, Prince Buster, The Heptones and U-Roy on the thank-you list.
Booker T and the MGs also get the salute, with Playtime and the marauding F 100 showing their Stax roots. The influences arent overpowering, just impeccable a springboard for the Drift to open up and work their stuff. Rumour has found able accomplices, with Nick Larkins on keyboards and guitar, Michael Turner on bass and Greg Sheehan and Tone Broker sharing the drum duties.
Its a great ensemble recording, allowing all the tunes to breathe and ease their way into your head. A handful of Cruel Sea numbers even get a second chance to shine in the sun as Drift re-takes.
The CD is the latest offering from Bombora, the surf music label that brought us the classy Delightful Rain project last year. The people behind Bombora obviously love what they do, and if they can keep putting out music thats this good then well be the better for it.
The band is currently mapping out an East Coast tour from late January, with the possibility of a date at the Noosa Festival Of Surfing. Be worth catching wherever you are. In the meantime find the CD, its a great album - youll want it at work, in the car, at home. Dan Rumour and The Drift - the sound of a hot day at the beach.
